Southampton County Information

The Southampton County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency in that County. The Towns of Courtland and Boykins also have Police Departments, supplemented by the Sheriff. Virginia State Police Troopers concentrate on traffic enforcement on or near U.S. Highway 58

Southampton Circuit Court

  • (5th Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia is located at 22350 Main Street in Courtland. Four Judges hear cases there. (Honorable C. E. Eason, Jr., Honorable R. H. Sandwich, Jr., Honorable L. W. Farmer and Honorable M. A. Glassman)
  • All Circuit Court matters are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m., including bond hearings.
  • Bond Hearings are not set for jury trial days, but otherwise, the Court and Commonwealth Attorney try to set them as soon as possible.
  • Arraignment - Defendants may have to appear for arraignment (entering of plea). The arraignment itself may take 5 to 10 minutes, but waiting time is unpredictable. Persons in custody are arraigned the first day court is in session after arrest.

Southampton General District Court

  • (5 th Judicial District) is located at 22350 Main Street, Courtland, VA 23837. There are three Judges assigned to that Court. (Honorable A. W. Bates, III, Honorable N. A. Belote and Honorable H. L. Holland )
  • Criminal Cases are heard on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m.
  • Traffic Cases are heard on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:00 a.m.
  • Attorneys may set initial trial or preliminary hearing dates without their client needing to appear.
  • Bond hearings are set by agreement with the Court and Commonwealth Attorney, but are only held when Court is scheduled.

Southampton Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

  • Located at 22350 Main Street, Courtland, VA 23837. Two Judges hear cases there. (Honorable S. D. Clark, and Honorable J. E. Wiser) Both Judges also hear cases in the City of Franklin, City of Suffolk, and Isle of Wight.
  • Court is held on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.
  • Jail Information - All Southampton County (non Franklin) inmates are housed at the Southampton County Jail, which is located next to the Courthouse in Courtland.
