City of Chesapeake

The Primary law enforcement agency in Chesapeake is the City of Chesapeake Police Department. The Fifth Division of the Virginia State Police is headquartered in Chesapeake. Its Troopers concentrate on traffic enforcement at or near Interstate Highways 64, 264, 464, and 664.

Chesapeake Circuit Court

  • (1st Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia) is located at 307 Albemarle Drive. Five Judges hear cases there. (Honorable J. W. Brown, Honorable M. T. Arrington, Honorable R. G. MacDonald, Honorable S. J. Telfeyan and Honorable R. A. Banks, Jr. )
  • Felony Trials are heard Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 10:00 a.m. Bond hearings and other Felony Motions are heard at the same time.
  • Non- Jury Misdemeanor Appeals are heard on Fridays at 10:00 a.m.
  • Sentencing and Probation Revocations, are heard at 8:30 a.m.
  • Arraignments are heard at 9:00 a.m.

Chesapeake General District Court

  • Located at 307 Albemarle Drive. Four Judges hear cases there. ( Honorable M. R. Katchmark, Honorable L. L. Bryant, Honorable E. L. Evans-Bedois and Honorable T. L. Lomax)
  • Criminal Arraignments are heard every day at 8:30 a.m.
  • Criminal Misdemeanor Trials are heard every day at 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
  • Felony Preliminary Hearings are heard Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 a.m.
  • Bond Hearings are heard at 10:00 a.m., subject to 48 hours' notice to the Commonwealth Attorney. There are a limited number of these hearings set per day.
  • Traffic Cases are set at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. depending on the Officer or Trooper's regularly scheduled court date.
  • Attorneys may set initial trial or preliminary hearing dates without their client having to appear.

Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

  • Located at 301 Albemarle Drive. Four Judges hear cases there (Honorable L. B. Galbraith, Honorable A. D. Kubovcik, Honorable D. J. Whitted and Honorable L. D. Willis, Sr.)
  • Adult Felonies are heard on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m.
  • Juvenile Felonies and Misdemeanors are heard on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Arraignments for persons in custody are heard at 8:15 a.m. daily. Those released on bond or summons must appear when directed by the Summons or Recognizance.
  • Jail Information - Almost all Chesapeake adult inmates are held at the Chesapeake City Jail, 400 Albemarle Drive.
  • Chesapeake also houses inmates at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail, 2690 Elmhurst Lane, Portsmouth, VA 23701
